The punch (2) of the power press (1) operates inside the protecting screens (3,4,5). A rectangular frame (9) is fixed to the edges of the base plate (6) and is provided with a row of holes along each edge. These holes act as guides for the sliding bars (8). With small workpieces, the bars (8) are pushed upwards to touch the lower edges of the screens (3,4,5) so that a protective cage is formed. With a workpiece that extends over the edge of the base plate (6) the position of the bars (8) is adjusted to suit the shape of the workpiece, but nonetheless the operator is completely protected.
