Hydrostatic cylinder for location of shaft support bearing - has outlet throttle to respond to sudden load variations with bearing segment attached piston located in hydraulic cylinder
Hydrostatic cylinder for location of shaft support bearing - has outlet throttle to respond to sudden load variations with bearing segment attached piston located in hydraulic cylinder
The shaft (2) of a rotary machine such as a turbine is supported by a bearing segment (3) which has hydrodynamic lubrication. A piston (4) which is attached to the bearing segment (3), is located inside a hydraulic cylinder (7). The cylinder is connected to a hydraulic supply line (6) that includes a throttle valve (10) and a stop valve (9). Under normal running conditions, the pressure in the hydraulic cylinder is constant since the load variations from the shaft (2) are minute. During starting up of the turbine, dynamic loads are created which are several times greater than the normal running loads. Since they occur suddenly, the throttle valve (10) prevents the hydraulic fluid from escaping, thus the shaft is fully supported.
