In order to avoid synchronisation difficulties when crossing from the old to the new recording, synchronisation signals in the old recording are compared with those in the new recording. The servo system of the recorder is controlled in accordance with the phase difference, so that correct phase relation is re-established. A reversible counter is set to a certain position during recording or reproduction at the instant of the required junction passage. During forward run and rewinding pulses proportional to the tape length are used for the reversible counter control. After restarting the tape the recorder is set to reproduction until the counter reaches the same state as when set, and then the recorder is switched to recording.
