Prodn. of but-2-yne-1,4-diol (I) comprises reacting acetylene and HCHO in aq. soln. at high temp. (pref. 70-110 degrees C.), and opt. high press. in presence of a catalyst consisting of the reaction prod. of acetylene, HCHO and a Cu(II) cpd. deposited on a silicic acid carrier. The pH of the reaction mixt. is 5.5 and the catalyst is prepd. by reacting a Cu(II) cpd., acetylene and HCHO in aq. soln. of pH 5.5 and the reaction is stopped when =2 g. mole HCHO have been converted per g. atom Cu. The catalyst is pref. prod. at 60-90 degrees C. Catalysts have high activity, long life and are stable towards alkali. Conversions of =3 kg. (I) per l. reactor space per day can be achieved at acetylene press. of 5 bar.
