The scarper chain conveyor for a coal cutting machine with a part of the machine supported by rollers which travel along one side of the conveyor itself, uses a pinion (5) of the machine to engage the chain (6) to form a drive. The chain is housed in the space (7) between side members (12,13) which rest on the other side of the conveyor. The chain has round links, and there is a limited space (8) for clearance between the horizontal links (8) and recesses in the side members, which act as chain guides. The pinion teeth are designed to clear the vertical chain links, and only one tooth (10) is in engagement at a time.
