A compact magnetic tape cassette design has a selectable record or erase function inhibit feature which can be positioned with a screw driver to inhibit these or not as required. The casssete (1) typically has two inhibit windows (3, 3') corresponding to two tracks on the tape. Inside each of these is a roughly cylindrical shaped inhibiting element (4), one side of the cylinder being removed. A screwdriver adjustment slot (9) on this element allows it to be positioned so that a playing desk probe can either enter the window (3, 3') or not, thus allowing or inhibiting recording or erasing functions as required.
