Ultrasonic pipe or tube testing of longitudinal, diagonal, transverse and surface defects as well as wall thickness weakness uses test heads. The tube is moved in an axial direction without rotation past stationary test heads which produce lamb waves, and are equipped with a transmitter/receiver arrangement. The sound waves pass several times through the tube wall in a circumferential direction and are measured at each rotation. The resultant series of ultrasonic indications are used in the determination of defects. The transmitter head (1) and receiver head (2) are applied to the tube (3). Ultrasonic waves are applied to the test piece at an angle.
