The determination of the distribution of acoustic energy obtained from ultrasonic scanning of an object is provided by two sets of acoustic receivers. One set is in the form of semi-circular segments and one set of radial segments, to provide a set of values in polar co-ordinates. A circular sender/receiver passes acoustic signals through an aperture (9) in the receiver plates (2, 3). A lens (B) produces a parallel acoustic signal (11) that is reflected from the surface of the test objects (14). The acoustic signal may either be continuous or pulsed. The reflected signals are detected by the receivers (4, 5) and are converted into electrical signals for analysis. The receivers are piezo electric.
