Automatic tool exchange device for machine tools, with an issue installation, and a tool magazine which has several locations for the reception of tools. The issuing unit removes the tool from the magazine and presents to an issuing point, brings it to its working position in the machine, and subsequently returns it to the magazine again. The magazine is movable relatively to the issuing position. In each magazine position (36), a marking (37) is probed by a feeler unit (38). When the magazine (35) is filled with tools (W) the probe is set in motion, and when a tool is removed for working in the machine (31) is remains operative.
