The rotary printing machine has at least one printing station whose cylinder has laterally positioned smudge rings (16, 17) which roll on one another. A warning unit is used to indicate when the interacting rings are lifted. The warning unit comprises a light source (18) and photocell receiver (19) located either side of the contact zone between the two rings. The output signal from the cell passes to an amplifier (22), a digital counter (24), a further counter (25) coupled to a timer and finally a signalling unit (15) which is operated by the output signal from the final counter.
