A soln. of the radioactive isotope La 140 is produced from radioactive Ba 140 in an isotope generator by washing radioactive Ba 140, which may contain non-radioactive Ba and which is bound as sulphate by using water or a dilute acid. The resultant soln. is passed thorugh a granular filter bed composed of non-radioactive Ba sulphate and Ca sulphate, and the La 140 soln. is then collected. The radioactive Ba 140 sulphate starting material is obtd. by digesting a Ba 140 chloride soln., which may contain non-radioactive Ba chloride, with a sulphate ion contg. soln. such as sulphuric acid, the resultant radioactive Ba 140 sulphate being passed to the filter bed. Method is simple and Ba 140 2s prevented from passing into the eluate.
