Safety system esp. for computers employs a key, which fits ito a socket and has contacts which connect circuits in the key to circuits in the socket, whereby a release system enables a given function to be carried out when mechanical and electrical characteristics match each other. The key has a stored output code and a computer that converts this code into a data sequence. The release system has a code generator and store to produce a secondary code. When the mechanical and electrical characteristics of key and socket match, the data sequence is fed into the socket circuit and mixed with the secondary code to form a transfer code. The release system also stores a secondary code which is used to separate the first secondary code from the transfer code. The transfer code is related back to the data sequence and, after the transfer code has been checked, a release instruction is produced.
