The pump (40) supplies oil through the pipe (7) and control valve (8) to the clutches of the gear box (9). The pump also supplies oil through the pipes (41) and (43) to the torque converter (20). When the impeller brake (25) is applied the pressure in the torque converter rises and the oil flows out through the cooler (46), pipe (45) and returns to the pipe (43) through the orifice (47). When the impeller brake (25) is released, the pressure in the torque converter falls with a corresponding drop in temperature. The flow through the heat exchanger is reduced and oil flows from the pipe (43) in the opposite direction along the pipe (50) to the pressure limiting valve (51) to lubricate the bearings (10) of the gear box (9), and bearings (33) of the reversing gear (30).
