The bed can be raised or lowered along slant columns (14), the telescopic undercarriage strut (28, 29) adjusting its length accordingly. The columns retract into the head/foot boards (3), which also house their long-screw-and-nut mechanism (motors 18). If the bed is supported in its highest position and the legs retracted, a second bed (in lowest position) can be wheeled underneath and raised up to the first, forming a stack, to which further beds can be similarly added. One version of the bed has a stiff mattress hinged near the middle, with a strut supporting the head end. When the legs of the bed are retracted, the strut folds the mattress, raising the patient to a sitting position, from which he can more easily get out of bed.
