Process for controlling the refining of molten iron where industrially pure O2 is blown through at least one tuyere located below the surface of the bath, comprising a value characteristic of the converter movement during the oxygen blow and detecting the one or two moments when there is a sharp drop in this value. Starting from one or the other of these moments the amt. of O2 required is blown in to obtain the precise moment of the end of refining coresponding to the quality of the steel required, the amt. of O2 being determined with the aid of a relationship previously established, for the converter being used, between the amt. of O2 and either the amt. of P in the steel or the Fe content in the slag. The converter movements are pref. measured along the axis passing through the trunnions, using their amplitude, frequency or acceleration, e.g. by use of an accelerometer. Method eliminates the need for premature tilting of the converter e.g. for measuring the Fe in the slag, as the converter movements indicate the precise end of refining.
