In preparing a length of weft yarn for insertion in a shuttleless loom, there is a yarn support surface ranging from the free end of a clip and yarn feed assembly, mounted on the sley relative to its shaped components. The clif is shaped and aligned so that the yarn (S') crosses the path of sley movement. The weft yarn is diverted through the clip on the limiting movement of the sley. It is picked up after passing the free end of the clip from the yarn support surface. The reverse motion of the sley carries it over the surface to the yarn feed unit into the position for transfer to the weft insertion mechanism. The design gives a rapid feed of weft yarn lengths to the weft insertion system, without requiring complex transfer components, giving high speed working.
