Refractory linings for steel casting ladles - perforated drain tubes in lining assist drying of new lining

A refractory lining for metallurgical vessels is mfd. by ramming or spraying crude sand and during drying, the evapn. of the water contained in the sand is assured by the use of drains consisting of hollow longitudinal bodies put in appropriate locations prior to depositing the sand. The drains pref. traverse the entire thickness of the lining so one end is flush with the inner surface of the lining, the axis of the drains being perpendicular to, and having a foot for resting on a surface so the drain remains in position and also acts as reinforcement for the lining. The drains may be porous or perforated to permit evapn. of the water, and pref. consist of e.g. Cu stuffed with asbestos. Esp. used for lining ladles used for casting molten steel. Process ensures proper removal of the water in the refractory during drying and also supports the lining in large ladles of e.g. 200 t capacity.
