Inlet structure for cooling water for nuclear power plant comprises a branch channel which is closed off from the river by a grid and which leads into an inlet channel which extends in the direction of flow of the river and which is completely below water level. The bottom of the inlet channel lies beneath the lower edge of the branch channel, and the roof of the inlet channel lies above the upper edge of the branch channel. Both the bottom and roof of the inlet channel are sloping so that the channel becomes higher in the direction of flow of the river. The grid pref. comprises a rotary drum with horizontal iron bars located at the point of entry of the branch channel into the inlet channel and driven by a motor so that peripheral movement of the drum corresponds to the direction of flow of the river.
