The ship's propeller shaft (2) passes out of the hull (3) via a bearing (12) lubricated by a gravity fed oil tank (17). The outside of the hull is protected by a double lipped seal (8, 9) which has a rising drainage duct (16) between the lips to lead any oil leaks back into the hull. The return pipe has a rising drainage duct (16) between the lips to lead any oil leaks back into the hull. The return pipe has a syphon head which requires a pressure greater than the oil feed pressure to return the flow. The propeller (1) is sealed against the shaft by sliding ring (4, 5) seals to prevent ingress of seawater. A second drainage duct (15) leads downwards from the space behind the ring seals, with a drainage cock (15') at the bottom to drain out any seawater.
