The spindle unit has two angular contact bearings at the ends of the shaft, which are adjusted for minimum axial play. The housings in which the outer bearing rings are mounted are supported in the spindle mounting by hydrostatic bearings. The radially supporting hydrostatic bearings are formed by three annular pockets divided over the length of the bearing housing. The axial thrust hydrostatic bearings are formed by gaps between flanges on the bearing housings and the spindle mounting. The hydrostatic bearings are used at low speed, while the ball bearings are used at high speed.
