The programmable electronic timing element with a counting chain has a logic circuit connecting the binary counting chain to a clock pulse generator for a preprogrammed length of time. A binary control stage determines the end of the preprogrammed time. The program outputs of each of the binary counting stages of a backwards counting chain can be short circuited by means of a NOR-gate, whose inputs are connected to these outputs and whose own output is connected to the reset input of the binary control stage. The advantage of this arrangement lies in its reducing the number of components needed for providing a programming facility.
