The tape recording dictating machine has a number of auxiliary pacing facilities. A basic tape recording machine (11) is fitted with a read back ear piece (12) with a start stop input (13) and with an audio signal output line pair (35, 36). The start stop input is driven by a hand or foot switch (14) in series with two automatically controlled switches (15, 16) connected in parallel. The open and shut times of one of these switches (15) depends on an audio signal detection circuit (17) incorporating delays which can be set by hand (18, 19) to control the on-off ratio of the switch (15). This simple ratio is altered by a pause detection circuit (21) monitoring the tape audio output, via a parallel switch (16). The result of this is that the tape records a continuous message when required, regardless of pauses in the dictation.
