The heat insulating material for filling the space between the coobrigplates and the cover of a blast furnace is prepd. by mixing (1) 100 pts. wt. filler material consisting of 17-19 wt.% river sand, 8-10 wt.% ferrochrome slag, and chamotte powder, (2) 9-10 pts. wt. water glass as binder, (3) 19-21 water as solvent, and (4) 0.5-1.0 wt.% based on liquid components, of a surface active foaming agent. The material is gas-proof and has good flow properties. It hardens rapidly without shrinkage to give a uniform pdt.
