In an appts. for carrying out chlorination reactions for the recovery of metals, e.g. Ti, Zr etc., or of U and Th from the re-processing of spent-nuclear fuel elements, as well as the purification of carbon and graphite; comprising a graphite shaft furnace coaxially surrounded by a shell, and connected to a graphite condenser downstream via a branch pipe, the furnace shell and the branch pipe consist of graphite, and together with furnace and condenser are enclosed in a gas-tight steel envelope.
