The space is formed by insertion of sheets of cellophane, plastic or paper, inside the plate during forming. The plates are rubbed to assist drainage of filtrate and are clamped together with cloths and frames in the conventional way. When the chambers are filled with solids, the slurry feed is turned off. Then the plates are pressurised internally hydraulically or pneumatically to squeeze further water from the cake.
