Gnaw-resistant paints, which produce a stinging or burning sensation in the mouth when gnawed or bitten by children dogs, rodents, etc. contain 0.01-1 wt % of a cpd. of formula (I) or (II): (where R is 7-12C alkyl or alkenyl, R1 is 3-8C alkyl, 4-9C cycloalkyl, 5-10C cycloalkylalkyl, 7-10C bicycloalkyl or 10-11C tricycloalkyl, R2 is H, Me or Et, A is COR3, C(Y)NR4R5 or C(Y)NHAr, R3 is H or 1-4C alkyl, R4 and R5 are H or 1-4C alkyl opt. substd. by CN, NO2, 1-4C alkoxy or 1-4C alkylthio, Y is O or S, and Ar is phenyl trisubstd. by H, halogen, NO2, 1-3C alkyl, trifluoroethyl, CN and/or 1-3C alkoxy). The paints are used on surfaces previously coated with Pb-contg. paints to avoid the risk of lead poisoning.
