Cell giving high energy at high voltage (.e.g. 3.65V) comprises a negative electrode made from an active metal or alloy capable of reducing NO2 (pref. Li) a non-aqueous organic electrolyte inert w.r.t. the active metal and NO2 (pref. a mixt of propylene carbonate and acetonitrile) and a positive electrode which is depolarised by NO2 dissolved in the electrolyte or supplied from an external source through a gas-permeable PTFE membrane, this reaction is pref. catalysed by a catalyst on the surface of the positive electrode (which hence has the character of a fuel electrode).
