Purified biological material is produced by continuous aerobic culture of microorganisms on hydrocarbons in aq. medium containing nutrient by passing a combination of non-ionic (I) and anionic surface active agents through a closed circuit in the fermentation medium during separation where (I) is an addition product of 15-20 moles propylene oxide and 20-25 moles ethylene oxide and (II) is a 12-20C or 10-16C alkyl sodium sulphate. The combination of (I) and (II) is suitable for both fermentation and seperation stages, and increases the volume output rate of products. Foaming is reduced.
