Inorganic felt prepn. - from polycrystalline inorganic fibres bonded with a colloidal inorganic binder

An inorganic felt is prepd. by first producing inorganic polycrystalline fibres esp. using refractory materials, from an (aq) sol or soln. of a salt or decomposable cpd. contg. an organic (linear) polymer dissolved in the same soln, by drawing from a soln. with viscosity 1 poise, and drying the fibres and heating them to decompose the metal cpd. to the metal oxide and to decompose the polymer and remove its residue. The fibres, pref. 0.5-5.0 mu dia are impregnated with a colloidal dispersion or sol. of an oxychloride, or an acid or basic organic salt which is convertible by heat into a sol of a metalioxide. The sol. may be modified by addition of a retention agent esp. a polyamide. The felts are used as high temp resistant materials.
