Polystyrene particles of uniform size, esp. for foams - by polymerising in suspension of fine polystyrene particles, and adding catalyst soln. and monomer separately

Polystyrene particles are prepd. by (a) suspending polystyrene particles of chosen size, with a given range, in water and (b) separately adding, dropwise, (I) a soln. contng. 10-60 (100) wt.% of the suspension polymerisation catalyst and 1-10 wt.% of the styrene monomer, and (II) a soln. contng. 0-40 wt.% of the catalyst and 99-90 wt.% of the styrene monomer. Uniform polystyrene particles, esp. 0.6-3 (0.8-2.5) mm. are obtd. Very small particles of little practical use, can be utilised as the particles initially added. Foamable polystyrene particles can be produced.
