Trimming rubber invested steel cord layer - with spring mounted adjustable knives acting on curved surface without pressure

The side edges of a rubber invested layer of steel cords, moving intermittently lengthways, are trimmed by two cutting devices acting on the inside of the edging cord at each side as the layer runs over a guide roller in the tensionless condition, only the edging wires being under load as they are drawn off at an angle and wound up. When the running of the layer is stopped for cutting off to length, the temp. of the knives is immediatley dropped to ambient, and on restarting is lifted at once to the operating temp. Arrangement ensures accurate trimming of the edge of the steel cord layer and thus accurate subsequent splicing.
