In the extn. the crushed ripe pods or seeds of the plants are extd. with a lower alcohol; the ext. is passed through an ion exchange column in H+ form, the alkaloid eluted with an alcoholic soln. of an acid, the acid soln. either neutralised, evapd. by azeotropic distilln. with an aromatic hydrocarbon and the prod. treated with HCl to give tabersonine HCl or the eluate dild. with water acidified to 0.1N to 2N with respect to acid and the acid salt sepd. (I) are hypotensive agents and inters for other indole alkaloids.
