The inlet valve is contained within a distance piece between the cylinder head and the cylinder block. It has a concave valve seat and a dished valve plate with an upper convex surface which closes to the concave seat. The underside of the plate has a corresponding concave surface. The valve is opened by air pressure and closed by a compression spring which acts on a flat central portion of the valve plate. The discharge valve is similar but reversed so as to act in the opposite direction. The dished shape makes the valve self centering and reduces the impact forces between the valve and seat.
