High voltage busbar chamber has a metallic envelope (10) at earth potential, filled with hexafluoride gas (12) and having single phase bays connected to at least a three phase busbar arrangement (14) arranged in the interior of the common sheath (22) of the envelope. Each single phase bay (24, 24a) is connected to one of the busbars (16, 18, 20) and comprises a switching device such as an isolator (32) and a compressed gas switch (40). One of the three phase busbars is situated in the middle of the sheath (22) and two single phase bays are arranged face to face on either side of the sheath and are symmetrically connected to a common point of the corresponding phase busbar, pairs of successive bays being staggered along the busbar arrangement.
