A continuous non-perforated belt (A) mounted on rollers on a charris (B) is driven by a motor (C). The belt is non-reflecting and has an exploration head (D) transversally above it containing a numerical display panel (E) and a number of photoelectric cells and luminous sources. These are mounted along an axis (x) perpendicular to the belt axis (y). An electronic circuit generates pulses at a frequency depending on the belt speed. These pulses drive a ring counter comprising a number of stages. Signals from the photocells and counter activate gates causing the numerical display to indicate area explored.
