A hollow body (3) has two superposed parts (4, 5) separated by a sealing membrane (6). The upper part (4) of the body, containing mercury, is used as a compression chamber and is in communication by a channel with a graduated glass tube (14) arranged on the axis of a thermostat (15). The lower part (5) of the body has a piston (7) onto which is applied the sealing membrane. The piston (7) is actuated by a wheel screw (10) to compress, via the mercury, a gaseous fluid to liquefaction. Pipes permit the introduction of hot water into the thermostat, the introduction of compressed gaseous fluid, and the formation of a vacuum on the compression chamber and under the sealing membrane. A manometer and a thermometer permit measurement of the pressure of the fluid and its temperature.
