Portable flat knitting machine needle selector is formed by a carriage movable along the needle bed and provided with an indexable wheel fitted with pivotable radial projections which during displacement of the carriage co-operate in a manner of a gear wheel with the needle butts. For display of a needle the wheel is arrested by a program control circuit, whereby the projection is rendered rigid and cams the needle axially into a selected position.
