Optical object shape detector comprises a device for projecting non-uniform light onto an object, consisting of a light source and a grid forming a striped pattern of light and dark areas on the object. A scanner which moves along a sequence of scanning lines transmits video signals to a device consisting of a power spectrum analyser and a comparator which compares the signals with a store of reference data. An oscilloscope can be used as recognition indicator for the generated video signals. A picture-by-picture analysis can be observed and compared with a superimposed transparent sheet to identify or to distinguish the object.
