The system incorporates one or more metal heat-conductive fluid tanks forming, with the radiators, a closed circuit for the fluid. The tank (1) is mounted in one of the fireplace walls, so that one of its sides acts as the heat exchange face, the fire in the hearth constituting part at least of the heat source for it. Vanes can be mounted on the heat exchange face, and inside the tank there can be baffles increasing the length of the path travelled by the fluid and thus the amount of heat transfer. There can also be a pipe coil (12) in the return from the radiators around the chimney.
