A sepg. process and separator for removing solid particles from a stream of gas which is directed as a downward vortex against the inner face of a cyclone shell, the shell being perforated so that the force of the vortex is lost progressively by leakage through the perforations, thus gradually freeing the suspended particles from centrifugal support so that they fall to the bottom of the cyclone. The perforated shell is pref. housed inside a coaxial casing to provided an empty jacket space in which a second vortex operates in the outer face of the cyclone shell, creating a back press. on the perforations; the second vortex is conveniently formed of purified gas escaping through the perforations of the cyclone shell. Sepn. of suspended, solid particles from a gas, partic. sepg. fibres from an air current. The recovery of fibres for re-use is facilitated because fibres do not agglomerate in this separator, i.e. they do not ball up and roll on the inner face of the cyclone because of the progressive loss of vortex press. since the fibres do not become tangled, they fall separately to the cyclone outlet and this allows this type of separator to be incorporated in a continuous process line using individual fibres.
