Automatic spot welder - with screw and nut traverse permitting arrest during welding without stopping screw

Appts. for spot welding two elements consisting of at least one welding unit of the clamp type associated with a reproducing pilot, comprising (a) at least one welding arm mounted on a support which can be oriented in at least one direction, and carrying a welding clamp at one end and means for co-operating with the reproducing pilot at the other end, (b) a screw associated with the arm via a drive nut and carried on the support, the axis of which crosses that of the arm of 90 degrees, the screw being intended to cause displacement of the arm between a starting and a finishing position, (c) means for temporarily immobilising the arm for the execution of a weld and (d) means within the nut for uncoupling the screw during the period occupied by welding and for making up for this period by an additional relative displacement of the arm in the screw. More esp., the welding arm, aligned at 90 degrees to the screw axis, extends in a plane parallel to that of the supports. Provides a robust, automatic spot welder of simplified design intermediate between a manually controlled machine and a so-called 'robot' welder.
