A numerically controlled grinder bearing assembly for journal bearing surfaces designed to permit oblique insertions has a base member (1) which is moved hydraulically for rapid insertion, and upon which a double plate assembly is pivotably mounted. The upper plate (3) slides over the lower (2) driven by a stepping motor (6) for direct or oblique grinder travel which can be included in programmed cyclic operations. The base member (1) can be controlled within the cycle via a jack (8) with the usual reduction gearing.
