Manufacture of key symmetrical about one axis - using pressed metal toothed shank inserted in groove in rubber head

The key is made in two section which are fitted together: a metal section which forms the body and a synthetic rubber head. The metal section is produced by passing a rod through a stock and die which gives the required shape, then the two sides are cut out and the rod is cut into sections. In addition to the notches, the cutting out process also provides the section with teeth which prevent the body from slipping out of the rubber head. The rubber head contains a groove into which the metal section is inserted. This process is quicker than the conventional method which involves cutting out the complete key from a metal plate and also avoids waste of materials.
