In fluidising by passing a rising stream of gas through a series of superimposed layers of fine materials of decreasing particle size, the particles to be fluidised being situated above the uppermost layer of fine material with the smallest particle size but of greater size than the particles to be fluidised, a reciprocating horizontal translatory motion is impressed on the superimposed layers. Prevents preferential gas flow channels being formed in the superimposed layers and thus ensures uniform fluidising.
