Headlamps of cars and light vans are checked in horizontal and vertical planes producing a test result independent of operator interpretation. Rolling geometry of the vehicle is also checked. Main and dipped headlamp(s) beams of motor cars are checked by test consoles (63) for each side. These are mounted on rails (64) attached to the test station front chassis (31). A motor driven shaft (73) ensures that detectors (65) are the same distance from the vehicle. The detectors contain light sensitive elements (91) which are servo controlled through reduction gears (84, 86) permitting measurement of beam positions. Rolling geometry is checked by detectors with vehicle in position on pulley wheels (4, 5) mounted on a rotary platform. An extendable spigot (52) with wheel contact plates (59) enables rear wheels to be included in measurements.
