Electrolyte for electroplating a base with Ni-Fe alloy comprises an aq. soln. contg. Ni sulphate, Ni chloride, boric acid, 8-16 g/l ferrous salt, 10-30 g/l alkali metal fluoborate, =1 sulpho-oxygen cpd. esp Na benzyl sulphinate, Na p-toluene sulphinate, Na allyl sulphoante or saccharin, and a hydrochloride of an amino cpd. of formula (where R' is alkyl, alkenyl, alkynyl, hydroxyalkyl, alkoxy, alkoxyalkyl, aryl, aralkyl, alkaryl, cycloalkyl, cycloalkenyl or heterocyclic; R2 is 1-4C alkyl or as for R'; -NRhR2 may form a heterocycle, R4 is H or 1-6C alkyl; R3 is H, CH3 or C2H5; n = 1, 2 or 3, if R4 contains 2C then R3 = H). Gives bright and ductile coatings. Soln. has long life. May be used for plating vehicle bumpers.
