Diphenyl derivs. having formula (I), or their plainly substd. derivs., are new: (where A is (CH2)n or (CH2)nO or O(CH2)n; n is integer 1 to 4 and one of X and Y is CN while the other is H or opt. branched 1-10C alkyl, alkoxy or alkanoyloxy, opt. contg. optically active centres). Plainly substd. derivs. include these contg. Cl or Me as substituents in one of Ph rings or modified by a CH2, C =O or -CH=CH- bridge linking the 2 o-positions next to inter annular bond of diphenyl system. (Mixts. of) (I) opt. contg. known liquid crystalline cpds. are used in liquid crystalline materials and in electro- or magneto-optical indicator devices is claimed. (I) widen liquid crystal temp. ranges when added to cyanodiphenyls, esp. 4-alkyl- or alkoxy-4'-cyanodiphenyls, or other liquid crystal cpds.
