A stencilling set for numbers, letters, etc., for tracing the characters in straight lines on a document or drawing consists of a ruler along which the strip (11) of characters can slide without requiring any further guide. The ruler has a dovetail slot (8) on its underside into which the strip fits, and a slot (4) down the centre, through which the strip (11) can be seen. The edges of the rule carry sets of markings (9) so that it may be used in the conventional manner as a ruler. The strip of characters can be exchanged for another with different characters. In an alternative design, the ruler has two parallel slots for two side-by-side strips of characters.
