The operating mechanism is for automatic covering systems, in particular those with vertical arches supporting a cover or tarpaulin on lorries, barges and railway trucks. The mechanism consists of two synchronised drive elements such as cables placed parallel to each of the running tracks on which the cover supports slide on runners. The two elements have a common control which is able to move in either direction along the running track. The mechanism also involves one of the arches at either end of the vehicle and couplings to link it to the drive elements. The runners which carry the arches along the track can be locked in position.
