Prodn. of alpha-mercuric iodide monocrystals comprises forming an organic solvent soln. of alpha-mercuric iodide (I) and =1 ionic iodides (II), and growing the monocrystals from the soln. The molar ratio (II): solvent is 0.001-0.05:1 and (I):(II) is 1.2-3:1. (II) is NH4I, NH2OH.HI and/or organic monoamine hydroiodides (III). Prefd. (III) are those of ehtanolamine, guanidine or methyl glycinate. Prefd. solvents are alkyll acetates, satd. aliphatic monoketones, satd. aliphatic alcohols (or mixts.) or satd. aliphatic nitro cpds., e.g. methyl acetate, acetone, MEK, MeOH/EtOH, EtNO2 etc. The monocrystals are useful in prodn. of X- and gamma-ray detectors and spectrometers; they are of high quality, i.e. they are perfectly transparent and have only ca 10 dislocations/cm2, and have a vol. of several cc.
